Types of MRIs
MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves instead of x-rays to produce detailed pictures of the human body. As the radio waves pass through the body, images are created on a computer screen for radiologists to analyze.
Depending on the type of imaging and the area being scanned, we will recommend a specific MRI machine for your unique procedure.
1.5T is ideal for scanning abdomens and chests, and has high accuracy for patients with certain implants.
3.0T imaging creates clear images of small bones and the breast, musculoskeletal, neurological, and vascular systems.
Breast MRI is performed as a supplementary screening procedure alongside mammography.

Types of Mammography
Screening mammography
Helps identify early detection of breast cancer, prior to symptoms — the point at which treatment is the most effective.
If there is cancer present, early detection can be life-saving. With 3D Digital Mammography, it is possible to detect small abnormalities much sooner than with traditional 2D scans. The smaller a tumor is when it's detected, the less likely the cancer cells will be able to spread to other parts of the body.
Diagnostic mammography
Helps investigate unusual symptoms or scan abnormalities.
If a patient has experienced symptoms such as discharge, tenderness, skin changes, or a lump, or a screening mammogram results in any abnormal findings, diagnostic mammography may be used as a follow-up. Diagnostic scans may be combined with other imaging methods for the greatest accuracy and precision. Your radiologist will help determine the best type of imaging to evaluate the area in question.

What’s a Rich Text element?
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
Static and dynamic content editing
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
How to customize formatting for each rich text
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
Breast Biopsy
A biopsy is a procedure performed to remove tissue or cells from the breast area for examination under a microscope. This procedure can help to determine if cancer or other abnormal cells are present.
AMI offers an advanced localization procedure prior to surgery, radio frequency identification technology (RFID). The RFID technology uses wireless radio waves to transfer data and identify objects by “tagging” breast lesions for surgical removal.
RESULTS
Our radiologists will review your images while a pathologist examines the biopsy. You will receive a personalized call within 72 hours of your procedure. Breast MRI
A breast MRI is a painless, highly accurate diagnostic test that uses magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the breast. Breast MRI does not use radiation, but uses a dye called Gadolinium, which is absorbed by breast tissue. The speed at which breast tissue absorbs the dye allows radiologists to find breast cancer. Highly sensitive breast MRIs are recommended by experts in the following situations:
Screening Exam
- women at high risk for breast cancer
- women with dense breast tissue
- women with a history of breast cancer
- assessing breast implants
Diagnostic Exam
- determining extent of cancer after a new diagnosis of breast cancer – surgical planning
- further evaluating hard-to-assess abnormalities seen on mammography
- assessing the effectiveness of certain types of chemotherapy before surgery

Breast Ultrasound
Breast Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to obtain a detailed picture of the soft tissue of the breast. It is a safe and painless procedure. It is often used in conjunction with a diagnostic mammogram to assist the radiologist in diagnosing breast cancer. A breast ultrasound can determine whether a mass or lump is fluid-filled or solid. It can guide breast biopsies or cyst aspirations.
Automated Breast Ultrasound Screening
Screening breast ultrasound called Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS), is an annual test using ultrasound of both breasts, often in conjunction with screening mammography, to better evaluate dense breast tissue. Check with your healthcare provider to learn about your breast density and to see if you are a candidate for screening automated whole-breast ultrasound.

Screening Breast MRI: Prior authorization from your insurance is required or you can select to pay out-of-pocket. Out-of-pocket exam cost: $500 OR $350 for implant evaluation.

Women with dense breasts have an increased risk of breast cancer when compared to women with average or below average breast density. If you have dense breasts, you may benefit from specialized breast imaging such as Automated Breast Ultrasound. AMI will notify you of your breast density when you receive your mammogram results letter. What to expect: during
A female technologist will take you to our calm, comfortable, women’s-only waiting area and show you your private changing room. Once you are ready, we will bring you to a private screening room, explain the procedure, and answer any questions you may have.
- We will help gently position you as comfortably as possible.
- One at a time, each breast will be compressed by a plastic paddle as the machine moves in a small arc to take detailed x-ray images.
- The whole procedure will last about 15 minutes, but the scans and compression time will only take 20 to 30 seconds per breast.
What to expect: after
Your breasts may be a little bit tender after your mammogram, but any discomfort should go away quickly. Our radiologist will analyze the images and send a detailed report to your primary healthcare provider or referring physician, who will then explain the findings to you.
- Usually, you will receive a letter in the mail with your results within 5-10 working days, and the results will also be available in the MyChart portal.
- If, for any reason, further imaging is needed for the radiologist to make their assessment, we will contact you to schedule a follow-up exam
- Our Breast Care Specialist and team are available to support and advocate for your care and treatment needs, before and after your mammogram.
Free and low-cost screenings
Mammograms save lives. We want to ensure these critical screenings are accessible and affordable to everyone, regardless of personal insurance coverage or income. The Bozeman Health Mammogram Project and Montana Cancer Screening Program help cover the cost of annual screenings for women who are uninsured or underinsured. Who Should Get Screened?
AMI follows the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force screening recommendations* for current or former smokers who are between the age of 50 to 80 years old, most Medicare plans cover ages 50-77, with a smoking history of at least 20 “pack years” and currently smoke or have quit in the last 15 years.
Lung cancer screening is a commitment—it is not a single scan but rather a monitoring program to catch any signs of lung cancer early, at its most treatable stage. Some people will have abnormal findings on their CT scans and others will need a once-a-year CT checkup. We are here to partner with you for whatever your personal needs may be.

Unfortunately, the way the scan is performed requires compression of the breast tissue for the greatest clarity in the final images. However, our staff will customize your scan to order to make it as painless as possible — if you are experiencing discomfort, please tell our technologist during your appointment so we can help reposition you.
All the scans performed at AMI use the newest, most advanced technology. Our sophisticated machines emit a level of radiation deemed safe, with minimal risk of long-term side effects. For breast mammography, the dose of radiation is about the same as the amount a woman would get from her natural surroundings over an average seven-week period. However, our radiation technologists are highly skilled at customizing the dosage for your unique situation and potential sensitivity. For patients requiring cancer screenings, 3D Digital Mammography scans could provide life-saving clarity.
Screening mammograms are x-ray images of the breast that are helpful for detecting any changes in women with no breast cancer symptoms or abnormalities. Diagnostic mammograms address active issues of concern, abnormal findings, or the need for fast and immediate imaging review.
The Affordable Care Act specifies that mammograms for annual breast cancer screening do not require a co-pay or deductible, for most insurance plans. Medicare covers annual screenings for women over 40, and most states require insurance policies to reimburse for mammogram screenings.
